Development Director

Description: 

Under supervision of the Executive Director, the Director of Development is responsible for developing and implementing Jacksonville Area Legal Aid’s (JALA) fundraising, marketing, and public relations efforts as well as coordinating the Board of Directors (JALA and JALA Foundation) and advancing the mission of JALA.

Responsibilities:

Fundraising & Event Planning:

Develop and implement overall development plan, goals and strategies.

Manage, coordinate, and create donor relations and solicitation material including annual direct- mail campaign (May and November).

Identify and supervise solicitation of prospects by Board Members and appropriate staff; recruit and coordinate volunteer leadership for solicitation.

Write and submit private and corporate foundation grant proposals; assist as needed with additional

State and Federal grant requirements and reporting.

Plan and execute annual Equal Justice Awards Celebration (January); coordinate event volunteer committee, event logistics, honoree selection, sponsorships / tables / ticket sale coordination.

Liaise with private and voluntary bar organizations in regards to fundraising events benefiting Jacksonville Area Legal Aid.

Accurately record, maintain, and update donor records in eTapestry database.

Receive and process all donations and donor acknowledgement accordingly; reconcile with accounting as necessary.

Coordinate donor recognition plan.
 

Marketing / Communications:

Oversee public relations plan and staff/consultants; provide oversight (and proofing) on all

Jacksonville Area Legal Aid collateral material to ensure that messaging is uniform.

Maintain and update www.jaxlegalaid.org website.

Produce regular (monthly) e-communications through eTapestry to donors and supporters of

Jacksonville Area Legal Aid; manage JALA Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms; supervise preparation of public relations materials including newsletter, annual report and informational brochures.

Provide support in internal and external staff and teambuilding events, opportunities, andcommunication (including Fun Day, holiday celebrations, and morale-boosting events).
 

Board of Directors:

Serve as staff liaison to Fundraising Committee of the Board of Directors. Manage communication between Executive Director / Jacksonville Area Legal Aid Management Team and the Board of Directors.

Coordinate Board Meetings; disseminate meeting minutes (in absence or in lieu of Board Secretary) and meeting agenda prior to monthly meetings.

Work with individual Board members and Board committees to expand the base of financial support for JALA and diversify the make-up of the Board(s) of Directors.

Conduct Board orientations with new Board members, coordinate to include Executive Director and possibly another member of the Board.

Perform miscellaneous administrative duties involving budgeting, planning and financial analysis.

 

Requirements: 

Five to seven years’ experience in fundraising and development, or equivalent experience, education and/or training which would demonstrate the required knowledge and abilities to undertake the duties of this position.

Experience with direct mail, special events, and individual solicitation.

Knowledge of foundation and corporate relations.

Extensive experience with donor/relational databases, preferably eTapestry.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Strong organizational skills.

Proven ability to coordinate and work with Board Members and additional volunteers.

Keen attention to detail.

Sense of humor and ability to adapt / react quickly.
