Deputy Director - Advocacy Director

The purpose of the Deputy Director position is to provide assistance to the Executive Director regarding all aspects of the management, administration and funding of FRLS; and assume responsibilities of Executive Director when requested by the Executive Director.

 

The following outlines the general responsibilities of this position:

 

  • The Advocacy/Deputy Director is a management level attorney position who reports directly to the Executive Director.This position includes involvement in the overall management of the program, with primary responsibilities for such areas as management of advocate performance evaluations, training, Private Attorney Involvement (PAI) programs, litigation support, and recruitment.Some involvement in personnel and labor relations matters is also included in this position.

Specific Duties include:

 

  • Oversee and assist with evaluations of all non-Administrative staff.
  • Evaluate and determine if probation is needed for an employee and follow up during the probationary term until final recommendation to Executive Director.
  • Handle PAI Involvement activities as assigned in conjunction with Executive Director.
  • Assist in hiring all professional staff.
  • Maintains expertise (by handling cases, reading legal journals and periodicals, providing consultation to other staff members, and attending training) in program priority areas and the fields of professional responsibility and Florida practice and procedure including appellate practice.
  • Litigation responsibilities on selected cases and assisting staff with litigation matters.
  • Be responsible for review of all complex litigation and other Advocacy matters.
  • Be resource along with Executive Director for Managing Attorneys on FRLS policy matters.
  • Serves as a member of the Management Committee to develop and implement program policies and goals.
  • Performs functions of Managing Attorney as assigned by Executive Director.
  • Write selected reports, grant applications and other communication for funders and potential funders including FBF and LSC as directed by Executive Director.
  • A member of Central Administrative team.
  • Responsible for program mission and work plan implementation, as assigned by the Executive Director.
  • Assume managerial and supervisory responsibility with respect to other management staff and members, as requested by the Executive Director.
  • Work with Administration and Tech Committee to oversee updates entered on website content.
  • Assists the Executive Director in communication in public relations activities as required.
  • Develops in coordination with the Executive Director or Managing Attorneys a comprehensive annual report for the Board of Directors.
  • Attends meetings of the Board of Directors.
  • Travel to other offices to perform evaluations and other administrative personnel related matters, as needed.
  • Reports to the Executive Director.
Requirements: 

Barred in FL, or eligible for timely admission to proactive.  Minimum of 10 years legal experience including substantial litigation experience in state and federal courts.  Highly skilled and effective lawyer.  Significant experience leading an advocacy effort other than litigation.  Prior management  or administrative experience involving supervision of staff in a legal services setting.  Excellent administrative and organizational skills.  Commitment to FRLS’ mission.
