Controller

Description: 

Purpose of Job:  To assure sound fiscal management and accounting for organization revenue and expenses.  The Controller is responsible for establishing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure the integrity of fiscal functions, with particular emphasis on compliance with the financial management policies of the Legal Services Corporation.  The Controller works with the Executive Director and the Board Budget and Finance Committee to recommend, develop, and implement financial strategies for program stability and growth.

Reports to the Executive Director

Work Environment:  Work performed in the office setting and in the community.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Establishes and implements accounting and administrative procedures and policies relating to financial management of organization funds, including such items as
    • Reviewing, revising, and implementing all necessary internal controls.
    • Producing timely and accurate financial statements and reports for use by funders and by the board and management.
    • Maintaining all books of account, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, General Ledger and all adjusting entries.
    • Producing end-of-year financial statements sufficiently in advance of external audit.
  2. Provides financial planning for the organization’s stability and growth by
    • Working with the Executive Director and the Board Budget and Finance Committee to develop annual budgets and multi-year projected budgets.
    • Overseeing and managing cash flow to ensure availability of funds as needed.
    • Interpreting monthly financial statements and data and providing guidance to the Executive Director and Board Budget and Finance Committee.
    • Implementing the board’s directives regarding the investment and use of reserve funds.
    • Recommending and implementing cash, investment, and asset management strategies. 
    • Monitoring financial statements and advising the Executive Director and the Board Budget and Finance Committee of developments or changes in the financial budget and projections.
  3.  Coordinates audits and timely filing of necessary tax returns.
  4.  Ensures legal and regulatory compliance with all financial functions.
  5. Ensures proper administration of client trust fund account by overseeing receipts      and disbursements and providing reports on accounts to the Executive Director.
  6.  Produces regular billing reports or invoices for funders on required intervals.
  7. Manages the employee payroll, including payment of withholding taxes and deductions for retirement plan contributions.
  8.  Maintains good and positive relationships with vendors and grantors.
  9.  Serves as part of the Management Team.
Requirements: 

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree required; CPA or MBA credentials preferred.
  2. At least five years’ experience in financial management role, preferably in a non-profit organization with an operating budget of more than $3 million.
  3. Experience in or knowledge of non-profit accounting, including fund and grant accounting, compliance and reporting.
  4. Knowledge and understanding of the Office of Management and Budget Circular A133 audit.
  5. Experience working with information technology staff to manage finance and accounting software.  Experience in Peachtree, Quickbooks, Excel, or other similar financial accounting software programs.
  6. Strong written and oral communication skills.
  7. Excellent organization and project management skills.
