Chief Development Officer

Description: 

The National Consumer Law Center® is seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to serve as Chief Development Officer (CDO) and help shape the future of the organization. We are looking
for a motivated and collegial professional who is excited to work on behalf of economically vulnerable, low-income people. The CDO will have a broad knowledge of both individual and 
institutional giving, develop strategies to meet annual and long-range funding goals, and foster a culture of philanthropy within the organization. The CDO will report to NCLC’s Executive Director and will be a key member of the senior management team. This position will be located in NCLC's Boston headquarters. Founded in 1969, the National Consumer Law Center® is a nonprofit advocacy organization that seeks to build economic security and family wealth for low-income and other economically disadvantaged Americans. NCLC secures over $4.5 million annually in contributed revenue,which is more than half of the organization’s $8.5 million operating budget. For more information, please see www.nclc.org.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and execute plans to increase NCLC’s budget through individual gifts and cy
pres awards, foundation, corporate, and government support, and conferences, trainings,
and special events.
• Work in collaboration with NCLC’s attorneys to design advocacy projects and funding
proposals.
• Evaluate the effect of internal and external forces on the organization and its fund
development, recommend short- and long-range fund development plans and programs
that support the organization’s values, mission and general objectives.
• Work in collaboration with the Director of Communications to implement effective
communications strategies and tactics.
• Supervise the work of NCLC’s development and communications team of 5 full-time
staff.
• Some national travel is required.
Salary: $105-$114K plus a comprehensive benefits package, including generous family medical
and dental coverage and other fringe benefits, including four weeks vacation.

Requirements: 

Qualifications & Experience
• At least 8 years of progressive development experience, including a minimum of 3 years
supervising a team of development professionals.
• Prefer candidates with a demonstrated ability to build relationships and raise money from
foundation grants, annual contributions, and major gifts.
• Excellent writing and editing skills; strong oral communication skills and the ability to
act as an effective spokesperson for NCLC.
• Demonstrated experience and confidence in asking people to contribute time and money.
• Exceptional analytical and critical thinking skills.
• Superb organizational, supervisory and interpersonal skills.
• Flexible, adaptable, and able to work collegially in a team environment.
• Commitment to working on behalf of low-income populations.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and fluency with fundraising software.
• Bachelor’s degree required.
