Administrative Assistant in Volunteers Lawyers Program

Description: 

Legal Aid Society has an immediate opening for an experienced full-time administrative assistant in its Volunteer Lawyers Program in its Nashville office. The Administrative Assistant will have primary responsibility for maintaining all electronic client records, monitoring database compliance with funding requirements, processing referrals of clients to volunteer lawyers, monitoring the status of cases referred, maintaining the database of case information and attorney information. The position includes interviewing clients and prospective clients, usually by telephone, to obtain the facts of their cases and to determine their eligibility for representation. The position requires adapting database systems to monitor status of cases and develop reports. Legal Aid Society has eight offices that provide free civil legal services to 48 counties in Tennessee. Our attorneys and paralegals handle cases for low-income people in the fields of domestic violence, housing, consumer, federal income tax, health, social security, and special education. The Volunteer Lawyers Program refers financially qualified persons to volunteer private attorneys. For more information about LAS, visit www.las.org.

Requirements: 

Applicants must be self-starters with ability to multi-task and complete projects timely with minimal supervision. Must be sensitive to the needs of low-income people and be able to relate to the needs of people of diverse backgrounds and adhere to confidentiality standards. Must be detail oriented and have good organizational and communication skills. Must be able to follow directions and work with a team and independently. Strong typing and computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office software are a must. Experience with Legal Files database a plus. Ability to learn new computer skills. Minimum two years professional office experience and paralegal or associate’s degree, or comparable experience preferred. Proficiency in Spanish is a plus. Some travel required.
